distant eyes

her eyes appeared to see for ever
her gaze was so remote
from where we were at the table
eating our supper as always
our conversation not flowing
missing the point talking
of day to day stuff bird tables
paintings and local butchers

her eyes appeared see for ever
at the mention of young kids
dreaming scenes that are not truth
seeing believing a different reality
tears squeezed out of her eyes
hidden pain reaching the surface
opportunity? childless sons

grandchildren? there is no fun

I feel anguish and pain

not giving what she wants

not giving what she needs

her youth vitality ebbing

this needs to be restored

but at what cost

it must be true
